Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below for the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. If you can't find the answer to your question, please get in touch.

Why choose an independent midwife?

Independent midwifery offers personalised, uninterrupted care in the comfort of your home. You’ll have more time, continuity, and one-to-one attention than is usually possible in standard NHS appointments. It’s all about making your pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood as supported and stress-free as possible.

What support do you provide during a home birth?

During a home birth, I provide personalised one to one support throughout labour and birth. This includes monitoring your wellbeing and your baby’s, supporting your choices, maintaining clinical safety, offering reassurance, and helping you feel calm, informed, and supported throughout the experience.

Can I use an independent midwife alongside NHS care?

Yes, you can receive NHS care in conjunction with my services. Many clients choose to combine both to ensure comprehensive support and access to NHS resources when needed.

How often will I see my independent midwife?

This depends on the package you choose. I offer flexible options, from single one-off appointments to full packages with regular antenatal and postnatal visits. Each session is tailored to your needs, usually lasting 1–3 hours.

What does an independent midwife do?

An independent midwife provides personalised care throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period. This can include regular antenatal check-ups in your home, one-to-one birth support, postnatal care, breastfeeding guidance, and newborn assessments. Essentially, we’re here to give you extra time, reassurance, and expert guidance tailored to you and your family.

How do I book your services?

Booking is straightforward. Please contact me via email (info@oliviaclaremidwife.co.uk) or telephone (07496260903) to discuss your needs and schedule an initial consultation. From there, we can plan the best course of action to support you. Alternatively you can use my contact form.

What areas do you cover?

I am based in Suffolk and provide independent midwifery care across Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex, and Hertfordshire. Depending on the type of support you require, I may also be able to travel slightly further upon discussion. If you are unsure whether I cover your area, please feel free to get in touch.

What is continuity of care?

Continuity of care means receiving support from the same midwife throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period. Rather than seeing different professionals at each appointment, you have someone who gets to know you, understands your preferences, and provides consistent, personalised care. This helps build trust, improves communication, and allows you to feel more supported, informed, and confident throughout your journey.

What if I have a medical condition or previous caesarean?

I am experienced in providing care for individuals with various medical conditions and previous caesareans. We will discuss your specific circumstances to develop a personalised care plan that prioritises your health and preferences.

What happens if I go into labour early or late?

I’ll be on call for you from 37 to 43 weeks to attend your birth. If labour starts earlier, I’ll do everything I can to be there, though I can’t promise availability. If your pregnancy goes past 43 weeks, I will usually be able to extend my on call period, but I can’t always guarantee my availability at that time.

Do you support VBAC births?

Yes. I support women planning a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean) and provide personalised, evidence-based care throughout pregnancy and birth. Every pregnancy is unique, and I work closely with you to ensure you feel informed, supported, and confident in your choices.

Can I have a home birth after a caesarean?

Every pregnancy and birth experience is unique, and some women may wish to explore the option of a home birth following a previous caesarean. I provide personalised, evidence-based support to help families understand their options, explore current guidance, and make informed decisions that feel right for their individual circumstances and preferences.

What if I need to change or cancel an appointment?

I strive to accommodate your schedule. If you need to reschedule or cancel, please inform me as soon as possible. I will work with you to find a suitable alternative.

What services do you offer?

I provide personalised midwifery care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. This includes antenatal appointments, birth preparation, home birth support, postnatal and newborn care, and one-off reassurance or support appointments. Flexible packages are available depending on the level of support you are looking for.

How long do appointments last?

Appointments typically range from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the service and your individual needs. This ensures ample time to address your questions and provide comprehensive care.

What if none of the packages suit me?

If none of the packages suit you, please email me at info@oliviaclaremidwife.co.uk or give me a call on 07496260903 where we can discuss what suits you and I can provide a bespoke quote.

Where do you provide care?

I offer services in the comfort of your own home, ensuring a familiar and relaxed environment. This approach allows for personalized care and the flexibility to address your unique needs.

Are you regulated and insured?

Yes, I am a fully qualified midwife, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). I maintain professional indemnity insurance and adhere to the same training and regulatory standards as NHS midwives.

Can I choose a one-off appointment instead of a full package?

Absolutely. I understand that each family's needs are unique. Whether you require a single session for reassurance, specific guidance, or a particular service, I offer flexible appointments tailored to your requirements.
