Frequently Asked Questions
Please see below for the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. If you can't find the answer to your question, please get in touch.
Why choose an independent midwife?
Independent midwifery offers personalised, uninterrupted care in the comfort of your home. You’ll have more time, continuity, and one-to-one attention than is usually possible in standard NHS appointments. It’s all about making your pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood as supported and stress-free as possible.
What happens if I choose a home birth?
Home births come with personalised, one-to-one support from your independent midwife. We provide practical help, monitor your wellbeing and your baby’s, manage clinical safety, and ensure you feel empowered and supported every step of the way.
How many appointments will I need?
This depends on the package you choose. We offer flexible options, from single one-off appointments to full packages with regular antenatal and postnatal visits. Each session is tailored to your needs, usually lasting 1–3 hours.
What does an independent midwife do?
An independent midwife provides personalised care throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period. This can include regular antenatal check-ups in your home, one-to-one birth support, postnatal care, breastfeeding guidance, and newborn assessments. Essentially, we’re here to give you extra time, reassurance, and expert guidance tailored to you and your family.
How do I book your services?
Booking is straightforward. Please contact me via email (info@oliviaclaremidwife.co.uk) or telephone (07496260903) to discuss your needs and schedule an initial consultation. From there, we can plan the best course of action to support you. Alternatively you can use my contact form.
What if I have a medical condition or previous caesarean?
I am experienced in providing care for individuals with various medical conditions and previous caesareans. We will discuss your specific circumstances to develop a personalised care plan that prioritises your health and preferences.
Can I still receive NHS care alongside your services?
Yes, you can receive NHS care in conjunction with my services. Many clients choose to combine both to ensure comprehensive support and access to NHS resources when needed.
What happens if I go into labour early or late?
I’ll be on call for you from 37 to 43 weeks to attend your birth. If labour starts earlier, I’ll do everything I can to be there, though I can’t promise availability. If your pregnancy goes past 43 weeks, I will usually be able to extend my on call period, but I can’t always guarantee my availability at that time.
What if I need to change or cancel an appointment?
I strive to accommodate your schedule. If you need to reschedule or cancel, please inform me as soon as possible. I will work with you to find a suitable alternative.
How long do appointments last?
Appointments typically range from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the service and your individual needs. This ensures ample time to address your questions and provide comprehensive care.
What if none of the packages suit me?
If none of the packages suit you, please email me at info@oliviaclaremidwife.co.uk or give me a call on 07496260903 where we can discuss what suits you and I can provide a bespoke quote.
