Can I have an Independent Midwife and NHS care?

One of the questions I’m asked most often is:

“Can I still use the NHS if I choose an Independent Midwife?”

The answer is yes.

Many families don’t realise they don’t have to choose one or the other. Independent midwifery can work alongside NHS maternity services, allowing you to benefit from continuity of care with your own midwife while still accessing NHS scans, blood tests and hospital services when needed.

What is an Independent Midwife?

An Independent Midwife is a fully qualified, experienced midwife who provides personalised maternity care throughout your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period.

Unlike standard maternity care, you’ll see the same midwife throughout, giving you the opportunity to build a trusting relationship with someone who knows you, your preferences and your individual circumstances.

Appointments are usually longer, take place in the comfort of your own home and are tailored entirely to you and your family.

How does Independent Midwifery work alongside the NHS?

Choosing an Independent Midwife doesn’t mean leaving the NHS.

Many women choose to:

• Have their routine scans through the NHS.

• Have blood tests through the NHS.

• Access consultant care if needed.

• Give birth in an NHS hospital with support from their Independent Midwife.

• Plan a home birth with their Independent Midwife.

This approach allows families to combine the benefits of NHS services with truly personalised continuity of care.
